Energy efficiency is important to us all in this day and age: even if
you're not a "treehugger" rising energy costs make it crucial to get
the most out of your boiler and central heating system. The average household spends at least half of it's energy costs on central heating, so saving the planet and yourself a few bob happily coincide. Here's a few quick tips to help you enjoy greener heating.
1. Draftproof Up
to 50% of heat is lost in households due to poor insulation and
draftproofing. Use draft excluders or door brushes where possible, and
plug any structural ingress of air with a product like Fast Foam.
If you live in anything other than a new build you might be surprised
how often these gaps occur. Just light a candle in each room and watch
how the flame flutters to trace down sources of drafts.
2. Only use central heating when & where you need it Turn
off that radiator in the guest room (unless there are guests, of
course!), second loo, utility room, etc. If an area of your home isn't
used frequently it really doesn't need heating!
3. Draw the curtains Most
of your home's heat is lost through it's windows. Drawing the curtains
provides an insulating layer which helps prevent this, and can save you
real money in the longer term.
4. Use the boiler, not the fire Central heating is much more efficient than a fire: gas, open, electric...most of the heat goes up the chimney!
5. Throw on a sweater We're
loathe to repeat the advice you've no doubt received from your mum and
dad, but it makes sense! Putting on a jumper isn't going to kill you,
and with a 1° reduction on the thermostat saving you up to 10% on your
heating bill, it's well worth it!
